May 4th 1979 was the birth of a new radio station in Edmonton on the FM dial. The Frequency, 97.3 MHz, the format, Classic Rock. The brand of the radio station K-97.
In the years to come, K-97 would ride the wave of music from legends like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and many more. A quarter century later, there is no sign of waning popularity for this music. The audience remains fanatically loyal, for the songs that have become the bedrock of K-97’s play-lists are the soundtracks of their lives.
In the Ensuring years since sign-on, new stars like U2, Guns ‘n Roses, Def Leppard, Motley Crue & Tragically Hip have been added to the Classic Rock universe, bringing an ever widening tapestry of definitive music to Edmonton Rock lovers. Fads come and go quickly and Classic Rock lovers understand the enduring power of THEIR music. The performance of Classic ROCK stations continent wide underlines that this format has never been stronger.
In being Edmonton’s only Classic Rock station, K-97 has become a unique and enduring part of the fabric of Edmonton radio and it’s listeners’ lives. Uncertain times only underscore the importance ofa station like K-97 that has developed a familiar and comfortable bond with its audience “active adults” (Adults 25 – 54). K-97 has built that trust through twenty eight years of exciting promotions, entertaining personalities and the best rock ever made.
